An Essential Piece for any Young Scientist Lab!
Anatomy science toy for kids
Every mad scientist has a large specimen lab jar filled with body parts – a severed hand, a lopped off ear, a big fat nose, and a pickled brain – floating in a jar filled with water. The best part of all is that these body parts start off small and get bigger the longer they stay in the water until they reach their maximum size.
How big do they grow?
Each body part starts out about 5 cm (2 in) in length and grows to human proportions… or a little bigger. The body parts should reach their maximum size after 7 days of “pickling” in water. You’ll also receive a one gallon size wide-mouth specimen lab jar made out of clear plastic – perfect to hold your young scientist body parts.
How does it work?
Growing body parts are made using two different polymers: a hydrophilic superabsorbent polymer and a hydrophobic polymer. The hydrophilic polymer is a super absorber and is similar to the polymer found in baby diapers.
A Perfect Science Gift!
Steve Spangler’s Growing Body Parts Jar is the perfect gift for that “special” someone who has everything – give them a “hand”, lend them a “brain”.
These Polymers Can Absorb as Much as 500 Times Their Weight in Plain Water
The hydrophobic polymer does not absorb water at all. This polymer holds the shape of the part while it absorbs water (stretches) and as it loses water (shrinks) through evaporation. It also acts as a “skin” to keep the part from turning into powder as it dries.
Comes With an Activity Guide
The kit includes an Activity Guide with a detailed explanation of how the growing body parts work… just in case you’re feeling the need to teach some ghoulish science.
What’s Included?
- 1 brain, 1 hand, 1 nose, 1 ear & 1 foot
- One gallon size clear plastic jar with sealable lid (to keep your creepy things inside)
- Activity Guide

I love the body parts in a jar! At the beginning of the year, we talk about our five senses in first grade and how important it is to use them all at school to be good learners. Last year we put the body parts in the jar and left them in our classroom for the entire year. People asked about them all the time! The last week of school, we took them out to see what would happen and they shrunk back to their original size.
I do wish that you sold the body parts separately from the jar as I now have a collection of jars and would like to just be able to use the ones I have and reduce the cost (and the plastic). It would also be great if the brains were sold separately as that would be a fun class gift!

They didn’t grow as large as we expected. In the picture they take up the whole jar. I sent them to school for my daughter’s science class. When the teacher brounght them for my Halloween party the brain and hand hadn’t grown much at all. Otherwise a neat project. Just not what I had hoped for!!! It didn’t give the WOW factor I had thought!

I’ve used these for the past several years in my classroom, setting them up about 2 weeks before Halloween. I tell the kids (4th adn 5th graders) that they are body parts of former unruly students. They love it! I originally bought two sets and threw the first set out after we used them the one year. Then I got smart with the second set and dried them out… I’ve used those for two years… and just dried them out again for next year. I swear… those are the first thing that kids want to see each day when they come into the classroom (how much they have grown). Lots of fun… and cheap entertainment to be used over and over.
